Star Trek Voyager: S7 E5 Critical Care

The Doctor’s mobile emitter is stolen from Voyager by an alien trader who then sells it to an overcrowded hospital. While Voyager searches for the trail which will hopefully lead them to their friend The Doctor soon realises that medical care at the facility is not the same as he is used to but is in fact  allocated based on the patients status in society.

The Doctor teams up with Dr Voje (Paul Scherrer) and Dr Dysek (Gregory Itzin) to affect the beginnings of change in the thinking of how patients are treated at the facility. The Doctor is then rescued by Voyager where back on board his own ship he questions if his program was malfunction regarding some of his conduct on the facility. Seven of Nine confirms that his program was operating properly the whole time.

Firstly allow me to say that the choosing of this episode to review was literally random (by dice role) which makes the fact this episode came up first slightly more ironic.

One of the criticism I have of Star Trek Voyager in it’s later seasons was most episodes focused too heavily on certain cast members to the detriment of some of the other cast members. I do categorise The Doctor as someone who perhaps got too many episodes focused on him. However I feel Critical Care is one of the better offerings.

The Doctor being placed in a different medical environment which is so vastly different from the one he is used to was rather interesting. It was quite fascinating to see how he worked, reacted and interacted to the setting he found himself in. With Robert Picardo giving a solid performance in this episode.

I opened my review by saying how ironic this episode being first was and some of you may be thinking why.

We here in Australia recently had a federal (National) election and one of the key elements of the election was the public health system and  that one day the level of treatment a patient receives is based on how much money they have (how much treatment they can afford). In other words their status in society determines the level of care they receive much like the theme of this episode.

Finally for those of you with a keen ear you may hear a familiar voice for the voice of Hospital ship alpha.

Supergirl S1e6: Red Faced

Supergirl learns that with her great power comes great responsibility and she has to learn to keep her emotions in check. Cat Grant receives a visit from her mother. Sam Lane shows up with a new android which is very powerful. It takes all of Supergirl’s efforts to stop it when it goes wrong. Meanwhile Kara & Alex continue to look into their father Jeremiah’s fate and they find out who the last person him alive was. In the end a small accident leaves us with a nice little cliff hanger.

Supergirl returns to good form with this instalment after a slightly less than impressive performance with the previous episode. The series seems to work best when stories about family are involved.

Here we see Cat’s mum come onto the scene, also Lucy Lane’s dad & Kara & Alex continue to dig into the mystery of the fate of Jeramiah Danvers. Clearly with all this family related content this episode shines. Add to it an awesome fight against an android and this episode was always going to be a winner. Melissa Benoist gives a really strong performance in this entry.

One of the strongest entries of the season so far it continues to build things up for the coming episodes.

Superhero Crossovers

It’s the season for Superhero crossover both on the movie screen and in our living rooms with the recently released Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice in cinema and the much anticipated Supergirl & Flash episode in season 1 of Superegirl World’s Finest on our tv streams.

This post does not serve as a review for either of the above, they will be separate posts later on. This post is about our greatest heroes meeting and the awesomeness that creates.

It’s always great to sit down and watch a movie or tv series featuring our favourite superhero whether it is the 1977 Christopher Reeve Superman, the 1989 Tim Burton Batman film, the 1990’s tv cartoon of the X-Men or the currently running CBS series Supergirl. These movies and shows allow us to escape to another world and allow our favourite heroes to entertain us in a world setting which is not far removed from the one we live in.

Crossovers in comics have been happening for years so of course it stands to reason as most of our Superheros find their origin in comic books that when these heroes make their transition to our screens that there will be crossovers there too.

When two (or more) of these titans meeting in a crossover on the tv or the big screen then the awesomeness of what we are watch increases greatly. We know that when our heroes crossover that the adventure and excitement will go up hugely. I guess this is one of the main reason why movie crossovers do especially well at the box office.

It would be interesting to see crossovers across the different universes of Marvel & DC but I highly doubt this would happen due to franchise competition.

So with that in mind which Crossovers would you like to see both in the Marvel & DC universes. Also if franchise was no boundary which Marvel/DC crossovers would you like to see?

Supergirl S1e5: How does she do it?

Supergirl is being monitored by an unknown probe which she suspects Hank is using to keep an eye on her, it’s true owner is soon revealed. Later at CatCo Ms Grant leaves the office in the care of Kara & Winn’s care with the added surprise that they need to look after her son Carter (Levi Miller). Ms Grant is going to collect an award in Metropolis. Meanwhile Maxwell Lord (Peter Facinelli) is launching his new hyper train while his company Lord Technologies is being attacked by a bomber. Elsewhere Jimmy & Lucy talk about why their relationship ended.

Supergirl-How-Does-She-Do-It-Lab

While this episode does not seem quite as strong as some of the more recent offering it is still a reasonable effort. Having Kara & Winn look after CatCo felt a little out of place with the other plot going on with Lord Technologies. To me this episode felt a little bit too busy with too many things going on at once which can distract the viewer.

That having been said there is a good deal of exposure for most of the main cast however I feel this would work better if it were spaced better and not all at once.

I think when it is discovered who the bomber is it is a tad predictable however it does leave the question as to Maxwell Lord’s true intentions un answered. Supergirl also learns that despite her best efforts you can not always save everyone and that some people don’t want to be saved.

Finally once again Hank acts mysteriously in this episode through his actions. Clearly this is building up to something but what is yet to be determined.

Not the best episode so far this season but I would call it a reasonably solid effort none the less,

*note this episode was originally going to be episode 4 but due to the November 2015 Paris terror attacks it was swapped with the episode that eventually screened as episode 4*

Supergirl S1e4: Livewire

*Note this episode and the episode “How does she do it?” were swapped in the schedule after the November 2015 Paris attacks due to the content of the episode*

It’s Thanksgiving and the Danvers family are gathering to celebrate Wynn is also invited as he has no other arrangements.

Else where Leslie Willis (Brit Morgan) a shock jock who is employee of CatCo speaks out against supergirl. Cat Grant tells Leslie to stop talking about Supergirl. When she refuses Ms Grant demotes her to the traffic report. During her report a lightning storm builds up and the traffic reporting helicopter is struck. Supergirl  saves the pilot but Leslie is struck by lightening which first passes through Supergirl.

Livewire as Leslie now calls herself has a vendetta out against Ms Grant and attacks the CatCo building. Supergirl manages to save Ms Grant. However during the exchange Livewire proves she is impervious to most of Supergirl’s attacks.

At the Danver’s Thanksgiving things quickly deteriorate when Alex informs her mother she works for the DEO. Her mother is displeased and the gathering is stopped.

Ms Grant agrees to work with the DEO and Supergirl to stop Livewire using herself as bait to bring her out so Supergirl can stop her using a method Hank devised.

Alex and her mother apologise to each other for the argument that happened and the episode ends with Fliza Danvers revealing a secret about Jeremiah’s past which sheds new light on things and caused Alex & Kara to look at Hank in a different light.

Supergir5

Once again Supergirl delivers another excellent episode as the series continues to develop. I know I commented on this in my review of the pilot but the casting choices of Dean Cain (Jeremiah Danvers) & Helen Slater (Dr Eliza Danvers) was a spark of genius.

This series continues to grow from strength to strength with the relationships and the way they are gradually building up Hank’s story, you feel something big is coming there soon.

With so much going on in the series it feels a bit hectic at times but not to the point where a viewer can’t make sense of what is happening.

Supergirl S1E3 Fight or Flight

Towards the end of episode 2 we see two things which would start to shape the series going into the new few episodes. Firstly we saw Hank’s eyes glow red, the second thing was at the very end of the episode with Supergirl about to give an interview to Cat Grant

sg_ep3_interviiew

During the course of the interview Supergirl accidently informs Cat of her family relation to Superman. Soon after this Supergirl is attacked by Reactron who is the first non alien villain of the week on the series. He is a villain out with a vendetta against Superman and decides to take it out on his cousin.

Reactron otherwise known as Ben Krull in the series is played by Chris Browning. He was a former nuclear reactor engineer who was exposed to radiation during a terrorist attack on his plant. While the attack was stopped by Superman the man of steel was unable to save Ben’s wife who died from exposure. Ben therefor blames Superman for his loss.

Supergirl-Episode-3-Reactron-Villain

Reactron attacks Lord Technologies and captures Maxwell Lord to force him to repair his suit. Lord is forced to comply. He then attacks a event being run by Cat Grant as a big media launch for Supergirl. Supergirl is able to defeat Reactron which is something her cousin was never able to do.

supergirl_3

Once again in the episode we see Hank’s eyes glow red. There is a really feeling that they are starting to tease this up to be something big later in the season. Towards the end of the episode back in CatCo we see a nice moment for Kara as she gets back to her daily work.

As the episode draws to a close we find out the relationship between Kara & Jimmy get more complex with the arrival of Jimmy’s ex fiancée Lucy Lane.

Another strong episode with Kara continuing to struggle and grow into her new role as a super hero. We see some nice development with several characters and the series is building nicely. This episode again shows some very strong acting by Melissa Benoist.

Star Trek Axanar Lawsuit

image

Yesterday news broke that Paramount Pictures & CBS have raised a lawsuit against Axanar Productions. Which is the company behind the crowd funded movie project Star Trek Axanar. Axanar have raised over $1 million in funding from Kickstarter & Indiegogo.

here is the link to a news artical relating to this.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/thr-esq/crowdfunded-star-trek-movie-draws-851474

To view the Prelude To Axanar please watch it below.

I am fully opposed to the action being taken by Paramount & CBS regarding this matter.

Firstly Star Trek has always been about the community and the fandom. The fans are what make a show or franchise popular without the fans a series is nothing. Over the years there have been some fantastic fan made Star Trek projects including Of God and Men, Star Trek Phase Two & more recently Star Trek Renegades & Star Trek Continues. In the past fan made films have been permitted by the studios and fans are not discouraged to cosplay and promote Trek Fandom.

Star Trek Axanar have several Star Trek a amuni actors in it. J.G Hertzler (General Martok), Tony Todd (Kurn & Adult Jake Sisko) & Gary Graham reprising his role of Soval from Star Trek Enterprise. Plus on top of these fine actors it also stars Richard Hatch (Battlestar Galactica). So it has an excellent cast and also wants to produce a high quality product for the fans.

Axanars story in the original Star Trek universe (not the JJverse reboot of 2009) and sets it’s events just before and during the year 2245 (when The Enterprise NCC-1701 is launched). This places it before the events of either the first Trek pilot “The Cage” or the main Star Trek original series (set in 2266).

I would pose the question to the reader given the Axanar story is set in the prime universe not the JJverse and despite the box office of Star Trek (2009) and Into Darkness (2013).

Are fans wanting a return to the primary Trek universe? Are Paramount & CBS worried about the popularity of Axanar and it’s potential success when it is fully released?

I hope that this lawsuit does not go through or is not successful and the Axanar is allowed to continue and gets released. It is good for Star Trek that Axanar exists and it is good for the fans of Star Trek that it is being made.
